Medical care in USA is very expensive. And most of the people can not afford to pay for the medical expenses if they get sick, God forbid! So it is necessary to get medical insurance for the period of your stay in USA.

There are two ways to get medical insurance. The person can get medical insurance either from the insurance company in USA or from his/her home country.

Medical Insurance from India

DO NOT GET INSURANCE FROM INDIA. THEY WILL NOT PAY YOU.

For every illness, they will either classify it either as pre-existing or something which can be delayed until visitor's return to India. The people in their Florida office will go back and forth between their own paperwork, paperwork from their UK office and paperwork from doctor/hospital. They will delay it so much that you will get frustrated and return back to India as your illness can't wait for all that.

They will say it must be pre-existing even after visitor has gone through all the necessary tests from doctor in India and everything was found normal and no illnesses were excluded in the policy. That way nothing would be covered. If someone detects Cancer after coming here, they can say this must happening internally for many months and it is not instant. If someone has heart attack, they can say arteries do not clog overnight. You must be eating fat/cholestrol food many years and hence pre-existing. If someone has tooth ache, they can say cavities do not form overnight and hence pre-existing.

They don't trust doctor's report in India and want similar report from US doctor done immediately upon arrival. This is clearly not the requirement while purchasing the insurance in India.

And for others they will say it can be delayed until going back to India. Well some illnesses can be delayed, but then that illness go worse and the patient will have to suffer more because of delay.

In short, getting insurance from India is equivalent of not getting it.

Medical Insurance from USA

Generally medical insurance from American insurance company costs higher. But the advantage of getting it here in US is that many doctors might accept the insurance card from the insurance company if that doctor knows about that company. Unlike getting the insurance from India where the insurance coverage amount, premium etc are fixed; the amount of coverage and the premiums vary a lot from the company to company. It is best to ask the individual company about the coverage.
